Education is Painful

____!Absolutely nothing good happens without accurate knowledge. In turn, knowledge cannot take place until we learn something new. Finally, learning something new always requires us to face the painful process of releasing previously-held positions or beliefs. Herein is the plight of the educator.

____!The learning process is similar to the game of billiards in this respect... no two truths (or balls) can occupy the same space at the same time. An old position cannot exist in the presence of newer knowledge, new knowledge always replaces old.

____!Nowhere is this more true than in the technology field. With new breakthroughs happening every day, we must be willing to be in a perpetual learning mode. This is true of teachers even more than it is of students. Sometimes it seems that as mentors we just get our teaching materials set up to the degree that we can finally concentrate on communicating these truths to others when along comes new information that while advancing the science, sometimes completely outdates our established teaching materials. Such is the life of the teacher, instructor, lecturer, presenter, etcetera... ad nauseam.

11I I became an Adobe Certified Software Developer in 1992 and maintained that status until 2001. During that time I designed and produced award-winning software for the digital imaging market. In the two decades since the inception of desktop publishing, I have consulted with numerous software developers (Adobe Systems and Aldus Corporation, Rochester Institute of Technology) in areas of digital image preparation, color separation color management, and print production.
